By 2020 all new homes built in California will have to be net-zero buildings that produce enough power to offset all their energy needs, and some of them may look like the super-efficient, super cool prefabs at the Modern Living Expo and Prefab Showcase that kicked off Saturday in Palm Springs.

Method Homes’ Paradigm home is designed for customers who want to live off the grid, said Courtney Peterson, the company’s communications director, who was on site Friday preparing the compact, studio-sized prefab for its opening.
