Over the weekend, Design Milk headed to Los Angeles for the hottest modern event in the West: Dwell on Design. If you have been with us long enough, you’ll know I haven’t been there since 2008 (although we’ve been since then in spirit and touched on it last year)! Over the past few years, we’ve been very lucky to share the Dwell exclusive house tours. You can see this year’s tours being shared over the next two weeks right here. In 2008 Method Homes built its first prototype cabin in Glacier, Washington, which was quickly acknowledged in home-building media for its attractive design, its efficiency and its environmentally friendly construction. The project was a collaborative effort by Mark Rylant and Brian Abramson, high-school friends and the company’s founders. Rylant had been working in construction and had grown tired of hauling drywall up several flights of stairs; he thought there had to be a better way to build a house. Abramson worked in commercial real estate and development and had an interest in building prefab houses that were energy efficient, healthy and durable.

SEED Collaborative has teamed up with Method Homes for the construction of what it hopes will become the first modular building to pass the Living Building Challenge. The SEEDclassroom is designed to be a portable teaching space available at short notice, and yet one which meets its own energy and water needs.

This showcase project aimed to show how modular housing can be used now to combine energy saving technologies affordably. “We focused on whats available now,” said Mike Jobes, the project’s lead architect. The resulting House of the Immediate Future spent six months at the foot of Seattle’s Space Needle as part of the city’s “Next 50” celebration last year.
